Credit Card Perks: Cash, Points or Other Rewards

Every credit card commercial shown these days boast about credit card perks. This one gives frequent flyer miles without blackout dates; another says you can choose between points, cash or other types of rewards. How does one determine which is really the best?

There are a number of issues to look at when you decide which credit cards to obtain and which ones to pass by. Consider the pros and cons of each before you make a decision. For a person who travels a great deal, the frequent flyer miles will probably rank fairly
high in the pros column. However, for someone who is a homebody and prefers to not fly or travel far from home, getting cash back on qualified purchases would probably ranker higher on the pros side of that list.

That brings up another question, what exactly is a qualified purchase? Does that mean that certain purchases do not qualify for cash back? How do you know the difference? Make sure that the term “qualified purchase” is clearly defined.

What other types of rewards are available? Can you switch back and forth between the various rewards that are offered and if [...] Continue Reading…

Paying Monthly Bills With Your Credit Card

For most lenders, bankers and others in the financial world, the first thing they say is no. Never do this as it is a dangerous practice. Under some circumstances, that may actually be the case. In others, maybe not.

A young person needed to establish credit. In order to do so he/she applied for one credit card with one of the companies that specialize in helping to establish or re-establish credit. Although the interest rate was significantly higher than what this young person was comfortable with, he/she decided it was the best option at the time.

As previously recommended, this young person opened a revolving credit line at a jewelry store that also specializes in helping people to establish credit. He/she also had a cell phone, automobile insurance and a monthly car payment to make. The automobile was difficult to obtain because this youngster had no prior credit.

This young college student decided at the time of the vehicle purchase, it was time to start creating a positive credit history. Paid twice a month, utility, rent, car, insurance and cell phone payments never coincided with due dates for the bills, which left this youngster [...] Continue Reading…

Identity Theft

The number one crime in America today is identity theft. With the technology currently available, stealing another person’s identity is far simpler than the law-abiding citizen would ever consider.

Taking a few, easy, security precautions, you can significantly reduce your chances of becoming the next victim. Think about how you handle your junk mail. Many people do not consider it to be anything more than just that – junk – and quickly toss it into the trash. However, if that particular piece of mail is offering you any form of credit, throwing it into the trash is like handing a thief an open invitation. Some people feel comfortable simply tearing it in half before throwing it away. To reduce the risk of someone stealing the information and fraudulently obtaining credit in your name, shred the mail instead. It only takes a moment.

Never, never, ever throw away bank statements, credit card statements, medical statements of any other financial document into the trash without first shredding it. Shredders can be purchased for as little as $20.00, and should be your first defense against possible identity theft. Cross paper shredders run a little higher, [...] Continue Reading…

Sign the Back of My Credit Cards or Not?

Numerous credit card users have become more cautious about using their cards as apposed to past years. Most people refuse to sign the back of their credit cards. This is to try to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of credit card fraud. Many leave the signature line blank, while some write “See ID” on the back.

The purpose of not signing your credit card is so that a criminal cannot use your card when trying to purchase something. They won’t be able to produce a signature or I.D. that matches the front of the card. They would not even be able to try to forge your name, if it wasn’t on the back. If a person was to purchase something online or over the telephone, your signature does not matter. However, if they purchased it in the store, the clerk should ask the credit card provider for identification.

Although everyone has their own decisions whether to sign it or not, if you did sign the back of your card, there is always that possibility that a thief could use your signature to get other information.

If your choice is not to sign the [...] Continue Reading…

Credit Ghost – Having No Credit

Having no credit can actually hurt you. One would think that having no credit would be better than having bad credit. This is not necessarily the case.

Not long ago, an acquaintance decided she wanted to purchase a home. She believed she would be easily approved because she had no debts other than the normal monthly utility bills, car insurance, and her cell phone. Her income and employment were solid. She had saved diligently for years in order to have a substantial down payment to purchase a home. She had plenty of assets, including a newer vehicle that was paid for, all of her antique furniture; a 401k she regularly contributed to and she owned several stocks, which were doing well. It appeared on the surface, she was a mortgage lenders dream.

In reality, she was a mortgage lenders nightmare. Because she had absolutely no debt, she also had no credit rating. Everything she owned, she paid for with cash or check. She had not developed a history of credit. She was what is termed, a credit ghost. From a creditors standpoint, she did not exist.

Because she had no [...] Continue Reading…

Do-It-Yourself vs. Hiring a Professional

Over the years, my business partner and I have done more do-it-yourself type projects when restoring houses then most people do in a lifetime. We have gained immeasurable experience in the process.

One of those lessons is when to do it our selves and when not to bother trying. There are some projects that are simply best left to the professionals. Installing various types of stone countertops and floors definitely falls into the category of hiring a professional.

While attempting to install a beautiful island top made of granite, we cracked it. Although we were meticulous in the choosing, preparing for shipping, moving it and placing it perfectly on the awaiting kitchen island, we missed a step. We had not properly reinforced the cabinetry and frame that would be holding up the heavy piece of granite.

Our error was an expensive one. Apparently, it was also not an uncommon one. We had installed countertops and kitchen islands before; therefore, we truly did not understand where we had gone wrong on that particular project.

We were fortunate in finding a local contractor who dealt with such mistakes as the one we had made. His team came [...] Continue Reading…
